Aguilera blasts the Voice for not being about music

Christina Aguilera has opened up about her time as a judge on NBC’s The Voice and slammed the show for not being “about music” and said it was an “energy sucker”.

The 37-year-old singer, who was a coach on the singing competition from 2011-2016, said she has no desire to return to the show.

Speaking to Billboard, Aguilera took aim at the show, saying: “It became something that I didn’t feel was what I had signed up for in season one,” she said.

“You realize it’s not about music. It’s about making good TV moments and massaging a story.”

Aguilera, who is gearing up to release her first album in six years, also said that being on the show meant that she was given restrictions on how she could dress.

“I didn’t get into this business to be a television show host and to be given all these [rules],” she said. “Especially as a female: You can’t wear this, can’t say that. I would find myself on that show desperately trying to express myself through clothing or makeup or hair. It was my only kind of outlet.”

“It became something that I didn’t feel was what I had signed up for in Season 1. You realize it’s not about music. It’s about making good TV moments and massaging a story.”

Aguilera was one of the original coaches on The Voice, alongside Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton.

Earlier this week, the Genie in a Bottle star returned with a catchy new single called Accelerate featuring Ty Dolla $ign and 2 Chainz.
