The Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State said the APC had threatened to burn down the INEC office in the state over ongoing inspection of electoral materials at the Election Tribunal in the state. The party alleged this today in Benin in a letter addressed to the Commissioner of Police. Read bellow:

The Commissioner of Police
Edo State Command
Attn: Mr. Ibrahim
Re: Inspection and verification of materials from Edo 2016 governorship election.
We refer you to the above and wish to draw your urgent attention to the following, as we also implore you to take urgent action:
1. Today, the 14th of December 2016, representatives of our party were at the Edo state INEC office in Benin, along with APC representatives, in continuation of the inspection and verification of materials used in the 2016 governorship election, as ordered by the election tribunal. This exercise started a couple of weeks ago and has been peaceful.
2. During the exercise today, new revelations were made concerning the irregularities perpetrated during the election. These revelations were so damning that the APC representatives flared up in wild protestation and started to accuse the INEC staff of collusion. This degenerated into an uncontrollable shouting match in which the APC members resorted to open threats to persons and property of INEC. Of grave concern was the open threat to burn the INEC office, to prevent them from providing any credible evidence at the tribunal.
3. To make good their threats, and before the situation could be brought under control, the APC representatives pounced on the INEC staff present and began assaulting them, until our representatives and others who heard the loud commotion, were able to disrupt the assault. It was a very unfortunate situation, for members of a political party to resort to such uncontrollable violence.
4. The exercise eventually ended in a fiasco and nothing significant was achieved today. However, we want to call on the Nigeria Police and the State Security Service to immediately arrest this ugly situation which may continue tomorrow, as threats to burn down the INEC office rent the air during the fracas. We advice that it would be better to err on the side of caution and to provide adequate security at the INEC office, henceforth. As a peace loving party, we abhor any form of violence as we stand on the side of justice and equity.
Kindly expedite action on this, as we continue to assure you of our kindest regards.
