Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari according to Presidency source has fallen sick once again and will be undergoing series of surgical operations in the United Kingdom.
In a bid to get the Nigerian President medically fit ahead of the presidential campaign for 2019 general elections, sources have revealed to LeadersNG that the president will be out for about 2 months.
The president according to a Nigerian Newspaper, Punch will be proceeding on an annual leave on the 9th of April ahead of the 25th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting scheduled to hold at the Buckingham Palace, St James’s Palace and Windsor Castle from April 16 – April 20.
A source close to the Chief Protocol Officer to the president told LeadersNG that the annual leave was just coined so that there won’t be public outcry that the president is going on medical vacation less than a year from his last medical trip abroad.
The source further stated that the medical trip was planned in such a way that it will coincide with the Commonwealth meeting.
An advance team of 21 persons headed by the president’s chief protocol officer will proceed to the UK on April 7th to make necessary arrangement for Hotels and as well book an appointment with the President’s Doctors.
On the list of the advance team is seven persons from NIA, two from Foreign Affairs, seven from protocol office, three domestic staff, one person from Chief of Staff office and the President’s personal friend, confidant and nephew, Mamman Daura.
You would recall that the Nigerian President had traveled to the United Kingdom on May 7th 2017 for Medical follow ups after spending 7 weeks abroad on medical vacation early last year.
The spokesperson, Femi Adesina, had at that time said “the length of the president’s stay away is to be determined by his “London doctors.”
The Nigerian septuagenarian leader spent over 100 days on that medical trip. It took the intervention of some coalition of Civil Society organizations known as Our Mumu Don Do to bring the president back to the country as mass protests in London and Nigeria were seen as a serious embarrassment to the government.
President Buhari’s health has been a major cause of concern to leaders, particularly from Northern Nigeria.
Northerners are particularly sensitive to the health of president Buhari, after then President Umaru Yar’Adua had died in office in 2010 which led to his then vice, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Christian Southerner from a minority tribe in the oil rich Niger-Delta part of Nigeria to take over as President.
“In February 2009, ex President Yar’Adua spent his annual leave here in Nigeria at the Presidential Resort in Obudu Cattle Ranch, Calabar. His successor, Jonathan to the best of my knowledge, never traveled on any annual leave all through his stay in Aso Rock. It’s baffling that the president is traveling on an annual leave to the UK after practically doing nothing except attending Party meetings and weddings”, an Abuja based political analyst told LeadersNG when contacted to make comment on the President’s annual leave.
LeadersNG Presidency source said, “The Cabal are just desperate to get ‘Baba’ medically fit at all cost ahead of the 2019 general elections”.
“They desperately want him to be fit in order to withstand the rigorous meetings and campaigns ahead of 2019.” The source said.
The president will be traveling alongside 28 aides which include some personal aides and family members. This excludes the government delegation to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Programme.
Some ministers, governors and government officials are also planning on traveling to the UK.
The president, LeadersNG further learned will be seeking for re-election in 2019 but many Nigerians including former presidents and prominent Northern power brokers are disenchanted with his government.
A former two term president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo had on different occasions attacked the president, labeling his government as corrupt and inept.
