The Nigerian Judiciary yesterday came to the rescue of Nigeria’s nascent democracy in its judgement which saw the lingering crisis rocking the major opposition party, The People’s Democratic Party coming to an end. Many members of the party believed Ali Modu Sheriff was planted by the ruling party to kill any form of opposition in the country.
This Victory LeadersNG learned, didn’t come on an easy ride for the PDP as efforts were made by Ali Modu Sheriff, and a Director in the DSS to bribe the Justices of the Supreme Court with N2Billion through the outgoing Executive Secretary of the NJC, Mallam Halilu Danladi.
The Supreme Court had on Wednesday declared the former Kaduna State governor, Ahmed Makarfi, as the authentic chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, after a prolonged crisis that rocked the Nigeria’s main opposition party.
Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour who read the judgment on behalf of the five-man panel of judges presided over by the Chief Justice Of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onorghen, set aside the ruling of the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt that affirmed Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as the Chairman of the party.
The Apex Court held that the decision of the National Convention of the party held on May 21, 2016 in Port Harcourt was right to have removed Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as the Chairman of the party being the highest decision-making organ of the party.
Justice Bode Rhodes Vivour while delivering the judgement, said Mr. Sheriff was not within the category of an unimpeachable leader, stressing that the removal of the former governor was not necessarily expected to follow a vote of no confidence.
A Judiciary source told LeadersNG that vested interests tried severally to sabotage the judgement but the judges stood their grounds. The source further told LeadersNG that a member of the panel of judges that delivered the judgement in favour of Ahmed Makarfi led Caretaker Committee of the People’s Democratic Party was said to have vehemently rejected the juicy offer made by Ali Modu Sherrif through the NJC Executive Secretary.
LeadersNG had exclusively reported that the Chief Justice Of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen was under intense pressure prior to the final judgement by both factions of the party and the presidency to subvert justice.
