Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has since launched an investigation into the office of the DG of the DSS Lawal Daura for cutting several deals with oil companies during the last administration.
LeadersNG have gathered that the EFCC boss is also investigating the DG DSS for recovered monies gotten from looters either by voluntary return or by raids. The DSS has carried out a lot of raids in a bid to allegedly collect state funds stolen by alleged looters. This has led to an open question of Jurisdiction between the EFCC which is the agency responsible for fighting corruption and the DSS which is supposed to be focused on National Security.
You would recall that the DSS had also raided the homes of Judges and arrested Ifeanyi Ubah over Economic sabotage. The latter has subsequently been released by the DSS without charge. Sambo Dasuki, the former NSA Adviser is not so lucky, he would have to spend 2 years in DSS custody by December 1st. While he is reported to have allegedly diverted funds meant to purchase arms to combat Boko Haram, it was a corruption case more than an issue of National Security, at least that is how Ibrahim Magu feels, a source said.
While Magu is disenchanted with the DSS for doing the job of the EFCC, the DG DSS has always been overheard saying that there is no need to jail corrupt people if they can return the money, a DSS source told LeadersNG. Magu apparently feels different about corrupt people and how to deal with them, and DG Lawal was posing as a threat to his standard of fighting corruption, so Ibrahim Magu began to investigate the DG Daura Lawal.
The EFCC boss believes that The DSS boss has cut himself a lot of deals with several oil companies including Sahara, Aiteo and Forte Oil PLC to apparently overlook their corrupt activities at the expense of the EFCC. These companies are alleged to have benefited from the subsidy fraud that bedevilled the GEJ administration under the eyes of Dieziani.
This cold war of supremacy between the two men led to the infamous security report submitted to the senate by the DSS against Magu’s confirmation as EFCC chairman by the Senate. Magu apparently belongs to the wrong cabal as Bukola Saraki, the Senate President will not even try to convince the chambers to confirm him.
While the DSS was raiding homes of judges and committing impunity as they allegedly “recovered” looted funds, the EFCC was discovering millions and billions in locations given to them by whistleblowers. Magu’s desperation to be effective led him to an Ikoyi penthouse where he discovered money belonging to the NIA, his brash attitude and disrespect for the rule of law were one of the reasons cited by the DSS to stop his confirmation by the Senate.
Magu and Daura have been fighting a Cold War since the beginning of their appointments into office, while their effectiveness may not be in question, it is rather abhorrent to see the two most vital agencies in Nigeria at loggerheads with each other at the expense of Nigerians.
With a defunct President missing in action and an Acting President who wields no political power, who will call the two men to order?
