INVESTIGATION: Amaechi Has Instructed INEC Chairman to Postone #RiversReRun

An INEC Source has confirmed to LeadersNG that the Minister of Transport and former Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi has approached the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to postpone the rescheduled #RiverReRun election to september. You will recall that the ReRun election became inconclusive after INEC had suspended the rerun election in Tai Local Government Area and seven other LGAs during the exercise that was held on March 19, 2016 following reports of violence. The major reason for the suspension of release of results was the unpreparedness of INEC and the security agencies to to ensure a free, fair and credible elections.

The Source said the Minister of Transport, Mr. Rotimi Ameachi met with the INEC Chairman in Abuja in the early hours of today by 2.00am to discuss plans on how to postpone the election because according to Mr. Amaechi if the #RiversReRun takes place on the 30th of July, the APC will not win any seat as the party was not prepared to go into the race. The source said the Chief of Staff to president Buhari Abba Kyari, the Secretary to the Federal Government Babachir Lawal and Mr. Dakuku Peterside, the Director General of Nigerian Maritime administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) were all present at the meeting. Mr. Amaechi pleaded with the INEC Chair to give them time so they can prepare adequately for the election.

The Source further said the INEC Chairman was reluctant to postpone the election in Rivers State to September because according to him, it will affect the image of the Commission but that pressure was mounting on him from the Villa. The INEC Chairman pleaded with all those present to give him 24hours to discuss with his Commissioners on the possibility of a postponement and get back with a decision.
