IPAC Frowns at Attack on A’Ibom Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini

—says elections were peaceful The Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC ) has condemned in strong terms the concerted and malicious attack on the Akwa Ibom State Resident Electoral Commissioner M. Mike Igini. Speaking at a press conference held in Uyo on Tuesday 12th February, the group maintained that Mr. Igini deserves praise and gratitude for standing up to what is right and ideal by refusing to compromise the anyone during the election. “Igini refused to dance to the antics and blackmail aimed to attacking his sterling character and integrity especially from the APC. Mike Igini deserves the praise and commendations of Nigerians, INEC should be proud of likes of mike”, IPAC noted. IPAC maintained that her members are proud to note that a credible election was held and the voices of the people and their votes counted. The group disclosed that the Presidential, National Assembly as well as the just concluded Governorship and State House of Assembly elections were peaceful in Akwa Ibom, even though there were outright intimidations and harassments in some parts of the State by those who claimed to be agents of the security agencies. According to IPAC, the election proved one fundamental point, that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has commanding almost cult like followership in Akwa Ibom State and the results announced are the true reflections of that deep sense of loyalty to the party by the people. The group blamed APC for their failure, stressing that one political party(APC) out of over sixty political parties operating in Akwa Ibom State relied more on the aid of security agencies which they had termed “Federal Might”, while the PDP was entrenched within the grassroots, and when the time came, they rose in unison and voted their for the party, and went ahead to defend their mandate. “That one indisputable lesson in the just concluded elections in Akwa Ibom State is the Majesty of God in the affairs of man and of course, the unflappable will of the people to determine who rules them”. “Democracy is about the will of the people, it is not an exercise that is conducted under duress or through the nozzle of gun or the sharp edges of the bayonet, “Akwa Ibom people rose in unison across the three the three senatorial districts and told the world loud and clear that in the God of Udom Emmanuel, they trust.” “The results of the elections are the true reflection of the wishes of the people”, IPAC maintained. 12th March, 2019 BEING THE TEXT OF THE PRESS CONFERENCE HELD BY THE INTER-PARTY ADVISORY COUNCIL (IPAC) UYO. AKWA IBOM STATE Gentlemen of the Press Let us start by thanking you all for the patriotic role you played in the just concluded Presidential and National Assembly elections as well as the Governorship and the House of Assembly elections that were held on February 23 and March 9, 2019 respectively. As the Fourth Estate of the Realm, you rose to the occasion and in your reportage of the proceedings, you wore the garb of objectivity and dispassionate appraisal of the events. You refused to colour your reportage to suit the hopes and expectations of a particular political party. That our democracy is maturing, our political culture becoming well entrenched and internalized by the people, is due mainly to the tireless patriotic works you have done in shining the light on the finer elements of our political process. We owe you our debt of gratitude. As major Stakeholders in our political process, we are gathered here today fully conscious of our sacred duty to the nation and the international community to tell the truth concerning the elections. We wish to emphasize here too, that we were not only observing and monitoring the proceedings of the recently concluded elections but active participants. We therefore, wish to state as follows that:
  1. The Presidential, National Assembly as well as the just concluded Governorship and State House of Assembly elections were peaceful in Akwa Ibom State, even though there were outright intimidations and harassments in some parts of the State by those who claimed to be agents of the security agencies, the people refused to give in to the intimidations and went out peacefully to exercise their civic responsibility.
  2. The election proved one fundamental point: that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has a commanding almost cult-like followership in Akwa Ibom State and the results announced are the true reflections of that deep sense of fidelity to the party by the people.
  3. That while one political party (APC) out of over sixty political parties operating in Akwa Ibom State relied more on the aid of security agencies which they had termed “Federal Might”, the PDP was entrenched within the grassroots and when the time came, they rose in unison and voted for the party, and went ahead to defend their mandate. It is our sincere believe that any other political party within IPAC will one day take over the seat of power in Akwa Ibom State.
  4. That one indisputable lesson in the just concluded elections in Akwa Ibom State is the majesty of God in the affairs of man and of course, the unflappable will of the people to determine who rules them.
  5. We have read with dismay the concerted efforts by the opposition to attack and assail the integrity and character of the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the State, Mr. Mike Igini and wish to use this opportunity to condemn in no uncertain terms the concerted and maliciously organised attacks on this noble and upstanding Nigerian patriot. Mike Igini deserves our praise and gratitude for standing up to what is right and ideal; he refused to be compromised and stood his grounds on doing only what was right and noble; he refused to kowtow to the fusillade of blackmail aimed at attacking his sterling character and integrity especially from the APC. Mike Igini deserves the praise and commendations of Nigerians. INEC should be proud of the likes of Mike Igini.
  6. Democracy is about the supreme will of the people, it is not an exercise that is conducted under duress or through the nozzle of the gun or the sharp edges of the bayonet. Akwa Ibom people rose in unison across the three senatorial districts and told the world loud and clear that in the God of Udom Emmanuel, they trust. The results of the elections are the true reflection of the wishes of the people.
  7. We feel proud that in our lifetime, credible and people-centric elections could and were held and the voices of the people and their votes mattered. They starred intimidations and harassments in the face and said “we will not surrender OUR WILL to freely elect our leaders
The people have spoken and their will as expressed in Udom Emmanuel should be respected. Signed:
Chairmen and REPS of Political parties in Akwa Ibom State
