RUSSIA 2018: Julen Lopetegui Fired as Head Coach of Spain

Spain has fired its national football coach Julen Lopetegui, just two days before the country’s opening World Cup match against Portugal His dismissal came after Real Madrid announced on Tuesday that Mr Lopetegui, who had only recently extended his national contract, would take over as their coach next season. Luis Rubiales, the head of RFEF, the Spanish football federation, announced the decision to remove Mr Lopetegui at a press conference on Wednesday, saying: “There has to be a message to all RFEF employees and there are ways of behaving that you need to abide by.” He added that the replacement would be announced “soon”. Spain is set to play its first match of the World Cup tournament against Portugal on Friday. The national side has been are unbeaten in 20 matches since Mr Lopetegui took over as coach following Euro 2016.
