he All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State is facing a severe internal crisis that could lead to a significant split within the party.
Key figures within the party are locked in a fierce struggle for power and influence, exposing deep-seated divisions.
Former APC national chairman Adams Oshiomhole is at the centre of the turmoil. Oshiomhole’s efforts to maintain his position as a political godfather and control the state’s financial resources have created tension.
A source within the party revealed, “Oshiomhole’s insistence on controlling the purse strings has sparked resentment among senior party members.
“Many believe his desire for dominance is hindering effective leadership and causing discord.”
Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, a perennial governorship candidate, is another central figure in the conflict.
Ize-Iyamu’s attempt to achieve his political goals through Okpebholo, whom he supports as a proxy candidate, has been marred by accusations of misappropriation of campaign funds.
According to the source, “Ize-Iyamu’s establishment of a separate campaign council and mismanagement of funds have led to clashes with Okpebholo.
“This misallocation of resources has intensified the conflict within the party.”
Jarret Tenebe, the state chairman accused of oil theft during the Goodluck Jonathan administration, is also deeply involved in the crisis.
Tenebe has voiced frustration over Ize-Iyamu’s control over campaign finances and Oshiomhole’s influence.
The source noted, “Tenebe feels sidelined by both Ize-Iyamu and Oshiomhole. His dissatisfaction with the current leadership and management of campaign resources is fueling the party’s internal strife.”
Similarly, Philip Shaibu, who was recently readmitted to the APC, is struggling to find his footing amid the chaos.
His involvement in a controversial airport incident that resulted in fatalities has further eroded his credibility within the party.
The source stated that “Shaibu’s attempt to gain relevance has only added to the confusion. His actions and manipulative tactics have damaged his standing, exacerbating the party’s difficulties.”
