Nigeria Government must End Shite Sect Violence against Nigerians, and the Nigeria Police Force.

Lagos 26th August, 2024.

Press Statement

The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Good Governance unequivocally condemns the protracted violent protests perpetrated by the Shite movement led by Sheikh El Zak Zakky. These violent demonstrations, cloaked in the guise of religious procession, have significantly disrupted economic activities across Nigeria and, more egregiously, have led to chaos and violence in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

We are particularly disturbed by the sect’s deliberate attacks on the Nigeria Police Force, as evidenced by the violent clash in Abuja yesterday. This reprehensible act resulted in the tragic loss of innocent lives, including three brave men of the Nigeria Police Force who were committed to maintaining peace and order. The Coalition extends its heartfelt condolences to the Inspector General of Police and the families of the slain officers. The sacrifice of these officers in the line of duty will not be forgotten.

The Coalition strongly condemns the violence that occurred in Abuja, which has left an indelible mark of grief and suffering. The Shite movement’s blatant disregard for human life and public safety is unacceptable and must be addressed with the utmost urgency. We call upon the Federal government to ensure that the perpetrators of these heinous acts are brought to justice swiftly and decisively. Holding those responsible accountable is crucial to prevent further violence and to uphold the rule of law.

Nigeria, under the democratic leadership of President Bola Tinubu, is a nation committed to peace, stability, and lawful governance. In our democratic society, every individual or group has the right to express grievances and seek change. However, these expressions must adhere to peaceful and legitimate means, without resorting to violence or disruption of public order.

We urge the Shite movement and its supporters to cease their violent actions immediately and engage in constructive dialogue through recognized and lawful channels. The continuous disruption of economic activities and public safety undermines our collective efforts to build a prosperous and peaceful nation.

The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Good Governance stands firm in its support for the rule of law and the protection of every Nigerian citizen. We call upon all Nigerians, to play their part in promoting peace and condemning violence in all its forms.

Finally, let us all remain committed to resolving disputes through dialogue and lawful means, ensuring that Nigeria remains a bastion of democracy and justice for all its citizens.
