Tenure Extension: Civil Society Organisations Condemns Blackmail Against IGP Kayode Egbetokun

The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations for Good Governance has expressed its deep concern and condemnation regarding the recent smear campaign against Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Nigeria. The group said there have been attempts by certain individuals and groups to blackmail IGP Egbetokun and undermine his tenure by spreading false information and allegations about the extension of his service, as the Inspector General of Police.

In a statement signed by its Secretary General, Olalekan Johnson, the group said “It is important to clarify that contrary to the misinformation circulating on social media and in the news, IGP Egbetokun’s appointment was formalized with an official letter dated November 3, 2023. This letter confirmed that the President approved a four-year tenure for IGP Egbetokun in strict adherence to the provisions of Section 215(a) and Section 28(c) of the Third Schedule of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).”

“The Coalition is alarmed by the continued efforts of certain mischief makers, whose aim seems to be to create unnecessary discord and destabilize the polity. Their attempts to distort facts and engage in a campaign of calumny against IGP Egbetokun are not only unfounded but also detrimental to the progress and stability of the Nigeria Police Force.”

The statement further said “Throughout his distinguished career, IGP Egbetokun has exhibited exceptional patriotism and professionalism. His commitment to the service has been evident in his unwavering dedication to the Nigeria Police Force, from his early years as a police officer to his current role as Inspector General of Police. Under his leadership, the Nigeria Police Force has witnessed significant improvements in professionalism and public trust.”

Nigerians have recognized and appreciated the positive changes and effective leadership that IGP Egbetokun has brought to the police force. His consistent efforts to work collaboratively with the police management team have been crucial in enhancing the relationship between the force and the public, thereby contributing to a more professional and responsive police service.

The group urge all Nigerians to continue supporting the Nigeria Police Force under IGP Egbetokun’s leadership as they collectively address the internal security challenges. Let us remain united in our commitment to fostering a safer and more secure nation.

The group said it remains steadfast in its support for IGP Egbetokun and calls on all stakeholders to focus on constructive and positive engagement rather than perpetuating baseless allegations.
