How Monday Ajiro, an SS2 student of Obada Grammar School, Idi-Emi, Imeko-Afon died after Corporal punishment in Ogun State.
On Friday, 25th of October 2024, during a morning assembly gathering, the Principal of the school addressed students that the waste paper basket has gone missing and that they bought a new one, so the students must maintain it.
The situation turned ugly when one of the students responded with a snarky reply, “Shebi owo awa na lo fo ra” that is “didn’t you buy it with our money?”
The Principal left the assembly in annoyance according to some accounts, then the teachers asked that the students provide the one who talked. The students refused to point out which student said it, so the teachers decided to punish all the students with whips of the cane (over 100 students) then asked them to do “frog jump” for a few minutes after the punishment.
Bear in mind that Corporal punishment has been banned in Ogun State public schools since 2020 by the commissioner for Education, Professor @ProfArigbabuaa (see attached).
Moments after the punishment, the deceased started vomiting and he was rushed to the hospital at Obada Idi-Emi. From there they moved him to a second hospital, and from that other hospital they transferred him to FMC, Abeokuta. Abeokuta is a 3hrs drive from Obada -Idi emi where the school is located.
Unfortunately, the boy died at FMC.
Immediately the boy was pronounced dead by the doctors, the State Government shut down the school. The teacher involved was arrested and the Principal of the school, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo was issued a query for allowing Corporal punishment under her watch, after which she was suspended with immediate effect.
On Saturday morning, delegates from the Ministry of Education proceeded to Obada Idi-Emi (not Obada Oko Abeokuta) to pay family a condolence visit.
The team comprised of the Director, Secondary and Higher Education Department in the Ministry, the Principals General, Egba and Yewa Divisions, Zonal Education Officer, Imeko Afon, representatives of ANCOPPS, Ogun State President, Trade Union Congress and the Ogun State Chairman of ASSUS. They presented a condolence letter from the State Govt and gave the family a sum of N500k to support the family on whatever they needed to do while investigations were ongoing, as the parents would not be able to get any work done for now.
Representatives of Ogun State government have also visited the family of the late student to get first hand account of what happened in order to ensure Justice is served.
The teacher reported to be directly involved was immediately suspended by the Teaching Service Commission and was afterwards arrested by the police. She remained in police custody since that Friday until yesterday when she was transferred to the State Command Headquarters at Eleweran for further investigations.
About 4 teachers were reported to have been involved in beating the kids, according to the teacher, they gave the students 2 strokes of the cane each and the students were 100+ in number… {Adetoun said on IG that it was 164 strokes per child, the teachers said the students were 160+ in number}
The 3 other teachers have also been requested for questioning at the State Police Command.
The Governor of Ogun State @DapoAbiodunCON tasked the police to do a thorough investigation and he has promised that those liable by the outcome of the investigation will be made to face the full wrath of the law.
I will post more updates as I get them.
