Zap Africa Launches ‘Ctrl+Z’ Campus Activation at FUNAAB: Empowering Students Through Cryptocurrency Education

Zap Africa recently launched its much-anticipated campus activation, Ctrl+Z: Unlearn to Relearn, at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), marking the beginning of an impactful initiative aimed at educating students across Nigeria about cryptocurrency.

The program, which will expand to other universities nationwide, focuses on debunking myths and misconceptions about cryptocurrency, particularly in Nigeria, while showcasing how crypto adoption can empower individuals to take charge of their financial future. With a spotlight on the unique benefits of non-custodial exchanges like Zap, the event emphasized the importance of decentralized solutions in building trust and fostering financial independence.

The activation kicked off with a two-week virtual hackathon, challenging FUNAAB students to think creatively and develop solutions to real-world problems. The winning team, Team Aura (Adejare Daniel, Nkem Benjamin, Odusiji Fathia, Adesugba Samuel), stood out with their remarkable project, a custodian wallet built on the Aptos Chain. Speaking about the team’s achievement, Zap’s Product Manager, Simeon Oyebola, stated: “Hackathons aren’t just about writing the best code; they’re about solving real problems. Team Aura achieved this impressively within a short timeframe.”

The grand finale, held on December 18th, 2024, at FUNAAB, drew a large and enthusiastic audience. Zap Africa’s CEO and FUNAAB alumnus, Tobiloba Asu-Johnson, delivered an inspiring keynote address, sharing his journey from selling jerseys and cryptocurrencies during his university days to leading one of the most innovative crypto companies in Nigeria.

He also introduced Zap’s upcoming non-custodial wallet, highlighting its unique features:

“You’re with your money. It’s not with me or anyone from the team. You alone have the power to determine when and where you withdraw your money to, unlike other centralized exchanges. This brings you one step closer to financial freedom.”

The event also featured a Q&A session with Product Manager Simeon Oyebola and FUNAAB’s SUG President, Comrade Ibraheem Adeyemi, popularly known as Bello, covering topics such as skill-building beyond coding and the importance of networking through communities. When asked whether school is a scam, Simeon responded: “School isn’t a scam, but it’s not all you need to succeed. You need school AND connections, and you build these connections by joining communities in school.”

The day was packed with engaging activities with students winning prizes such as cash, branded merchandise, power banks, and earbuds. Performances by Adebowale, Dirego Tha Hype Lord, and DJ Snowjae kept the energy high throughout the day.

The highlight of the evening, however, was an electrifying performance by Crayon, who treated the audience to an exclusive preview of his latest collaboration with Young Jonn. The crowd’s excitement made it a perfect conclusion to the day.

What’s Next for Ctrl+Z?

Zap Africa is eager to bring the Ctrl+Z experience to other universities across Nigeria. Reflecting on the success of the activation, Oke Umurhohwo, Head of Marketing at Zap Africa, said: “Seeing the energy and engagement at FUNAAB today reassures us that the youths in Nigeria are ready to embrace crypto as a means to achieve financial freedom. We’re excited to bring this experience to more campuses across Nigeria.”
