Despite losing an officer in a midnight raid, the EFCC have come under heavy criticism from Nigerians who criticized their modus operandi calling it abusive and provocative. Nigerians on X have also gone beyond criticizing the agency but are circulating several reports of different judges reprimanding the commission for their lack of manners and professionalism.
Some of the reports include a 2016 case at the Abuja High Court where Justice Peter Affen berated the EFCC for attempting to stall a case and detaining an Austrian security expert, Wolfgang Reinl for several months without trial. “This is not a motor park and you must not be throwing your hands anyhow shouting,” the Judge said. Another was a report of a leaked audio in 2022, where Justice Solebo of the Special offences court in Lagos, slammed the EFCC lawyer for lacking manners and professional ethics.
While closing monitoring the unfolding events of the unfortunate incident in Anambra, Nigerians are now calling for a complete review of the operating procedures of the agency and a termination of mid night raids by the agency.
