Enugu State University ESUT Suspends Four Lecturers, Class Representative Over Alleged Money-For-Grades Scheme

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has suspended four lecturers and a class representative indefinitely over allegations of extortion, also known as “sorting”.

The suspensions affect staff members affiliated with the ESUT College of Medicine (ESUCOM).

According to the university’s Registrar, Mr. Ambrose Ugwu, the suspensions resulted from the individuals’ alleged involvement in soliciting money from students in exchange for grade upgrades.

Ugwu, who spoke in an interview with some journalists at the weekend, explained that the lecturers collaborated with class representatives, who acted as intermediaries to collect money from students.

The registrar confirmed that four lecturers and a class representative have been suspended indefinitely, pending further investigation.

While Ugwu did not disclose the names of the suspended individuals, he noted that the university may release additional details in the future.

“In the College of Medicine, we have suspended four lecturers for soliciting payments from students to improve their results. Some class reps have been known to go around, after marking exams, collecting small amounts from students in exchange for ensuring that the lecturers upgrade their marks.

“Consequently, four lecturers and the class representative have been suspended indefinitely. In the future, we may disclose additional details,” the registrar stated.

This development comes after ESUT dismissed six lecturers in August 2024 over issues related to certificate forgery, sexual harassment, and grade alteration.

The university’s actions demonstrate its commitment to maintaining academic integrity and excellence.
