LP suspends Lagos chair, dissolves ward executives

The Labour Party in Lagos State has announced the suspension of its former state chairperson, Pastor Dayo Ekong and another party official, Sam Okpala, over alleged gross misconduct and violation of the party’s constitution.

In a statement following a meeting of the Lagos State Caretaker Executive Committee, the party also announced the dissolution of all Local Government and Ward Executive Committees across the state. The decision, according to the statement, was aimed at restoring order and constitutional compliance within the party’s state structure.

The statement was jointly signed by Rotimi Odunaike, Chairman of the Lagos State Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party, and Dorcas I. Omorodion, Secretary of the Committee.

It explained the reasons behind the disciplinary actions taken against the former leadership.

Pastor Dayo Ekong, who previously held the dual roles of State Chairman and National Financial Secretary of the party, was suspended for six months, with the party citing constitutional breaches and misconduct.

“The former state Chairman of the party, Pastor (Mrs) Dayo Ekong, is hereby suspended for six months for gross misconduct and breach of the constitution of the party by holding the offices of the state chairman and national financial secretary at the same time,” the statement reads.

All members of the former state executive committee were also handed a six-month suspension for what the party described as “anti-party activities” and their failure to uphold the party’s constitution.

“Every member of the erstwhile state executive committee is suspended for six months for failure to uphold the constitution of the party and for anti-party activities,” the caretaker chairman, Odunaike, declared.

The sweeping changes also affected the grassroots leadership as the committee announced the immediate dissolution and suspension of all Local Government and Ward Executive Committees appointed by the Ekong-led administration.

“All the Local Government and Ward Executive Committees in Lagos State appointed by the Pastor (Mrs) Dayo Ekong-led Exco are hereby dissolved and their members suspended for six months for anti-party activities, with immediate effect,” the statement added.

The development marks a major shake-up within the Lagos chapter of the Labour Party.
