Nigerian Nurses Union Issues 24-Hour Ultimatum To Ogun Neuropsychiatric Hospital To Reinstate Assaulted Student Nurse

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the management of the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, demanding the immediate recall of an assaulted student nurse, Ogunjobi Oluwaseyi Samuel, who was suspended following an altercation with a consultant.

The resolution was contained in a statement signed by NANNM Secretary, Comrade Olayemi Sulaimon followed an emergency congress held on Friday, 18th July 2025, where members of the union strongly condemned the handling of the case by the school and hospital authorities.

Ogunjobi had reported being verbally and physically assaulted by a consultant, Dr E.O. Majekodunmi, during a ward round on 30th June 2025, an incident that led to his suspension from the Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing Programme.

The student had written in a letter to the Provost and Medical Director: “I am writing to bring to your attention a disturbing incident that occurred in Male Ward One around 1:15pm on the 30th June, 2025. I, Ogunjobi Oluwaseyi Samuel from 2024/2025 Post-Basic set were subjected to psychological humiliation and physical assault by Doctor Majekodunmi.”

He further stated: “While I was about to take the chairs, Doctor Majekodunmi requested that the chairs be dropped and I was trying to explain to him based on the conditions and what really happened, he rather hijacked the chairs from me.”

“Lastly, he called me ‘a bastard’ and hit me on my left leg with the chair and further pushed me out of the consulting room through the exit saying ‘you are a bastard’ repeatedly.”

In its resolution, the NANNM said: “That the suspension of the assaulted Post Basic Student Nurse is unwarranted and should therefore be unconditionally withdrawn with immediate effect and the student be recalled to resume academic and clinical activities without delay.”

It also stated: “That the Consultant alleged to have assaulted the Post Basic Student Nurse should formally apologized to the affected student.”

The union demanded: “That all Student Nurses who were arbitrarily removed from their clinical postings by SERVICOM officials should be immediately reinstated to their respective clinical areas.”

It added: “Dr. E.O Majekodunmi should be strictly warned and advised to desist from his attitude of bullying and insulting of any Staff, and Nurses in particular, which has been reported so profoundly about him.”

The union warned: “The congress unequivocally demands that the above resolutions be implemented within twenty-four (24) hours of this notice.

Failure to do so may render the union unable to guarantee the continue maintenance industrial harmony within the institution.”
