The Nigerian government has announced that Friday, September 5, 2025, will be observed as a public holiday in commemoration of Eid-ul-Mawlid, the annual celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
This was contained in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on Wednesday on behalf of the Minister of Interior
The statement explained that the government took the decision to honour the significance of the day to Muslims in Nigeria and around the world.
According to the statement, the Federal Government “congratulates Muslims in Nigeria and beyond, urging reflection on the Prophet’s virtues of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion.”
It emphasised that the celebration of Eid-ul-Mawlid offers an opportunity for deep reflection on the exemplary life of Prophet Muhammad and the values he upheld.
The statement further appealed to citizens across religious divides to use the occasion as a moment of prayer and unity for the progress of the country.
It added that the challenges facing Nigeria required collective action and spiritual commitment from all communities.
It noted that the government was not only mindful of the importance of the holiday but also of the need to encourage all Nigerians to embrace peaceful coexistence and national development.
In this regard, the statement called on “Nigerians of all faiths to use the occasion to pray for peace, security, and stability in the country, while supporting the government’s drive for unity and development.”
The statement also highlighted that religious celebrations such as Eid-ul-Mawlid should be seen as opportunities for Nigerians to strengthen bonds of brotherhood and renew their commitment to the ideals of justice, fairness, and compassion.
The government urged leaders at all levels to promote tolerance and understanding as vital tools for nation-building.
While extending the government’s greetings to the Muslim faithful, the Ministry of Interior stressed that the celebration should be observed in a spirit of harmony and gratitude.
It expressed hope that this year’s commemoration would bring renewed blessings to families and communities across the country.
“The Minister of Interior wishes Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid al-Mawlid celebration,” the statement concluded.
