Rivers: Group Advocates For Peace And Unity, Calls For Governor’s Reinstatement

The Rivers Grassroot Movement (RGM) held an extraordinary stakeholders’ meeting today, where its founder, High Chief Hon. (Amb.) Sobomabo Jackrich, delivered a powerful speech advocating for peace, unity, and good governance in Rivers State.

The event saw a strong call for the federal government to reinstate the state’s governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, and the House of Assembly following the expiration of the current state of emergency.

Jackrich emphasized that the RGM was founded to bridge the divides created by partisan politics, uniting Rivers people “regardless of political affiliation, into one collective voice.”

He stressed that unity is the bedrock of progress and the only way to achieve consensus and people-oriented governance.

Commendation for Leadership and a Plea for Collaboration

The RGM leader praised Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his restraint and commitment to peace, which he described as a “manifestation of his deep-rooted love for the state.” Jackrich also acknowledged the “large-heartedness” of the Minister of the FCT, Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike, for his willingness to build peace. He noted that their actions demonstrate that peace is possible when leaders prioritize the state.

Despite commending the return of political peace, Jackrich’s speech was a firm call to action. He stated that the RGM will not “silence our voice of advocacy” and will continue to speak for justice and equity.

The movement’s core objective includes demanding accountability, engaging with public and private institutions on policy, and protecting the interests of Rivers people.

A Clear Stance on Governance and the Road to 2027

The movement openly declared its solidarity with Governor Fubara, praising his leadership style and the numerous projects he has initiated. Jackrich expressed confidence that upon his return from the emergency rule, the governor would accelerate development and initiate more programs for all 23 local government areas.

However, the RGM also made it clear that governance is a collective effort. Jackrich stressed that for the state to move forward, the governor and the House of Assembly must work in harmony.

“The people have endured enough distractions, crises, and divisions,” he said, urging both parties to place the collective interest of Rivers people above all else to restore public trust and accelerate development.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Jackrich advised Rivers people to be “deliberate in the choices we make.” He urged them to look beyond party loyalty, tribal considerations, and sentiment, and instead choose leaders based on competence, credibility, and character.

He warned against allowing nepotism and blind partisanship to guide decisions, as this only worsens the state’s situation.

Dumo Lulu-Briggs Honored with Award

The event also honored High Chief Dr. Dumo Lulu-Briggs with an Award of Trusteeship. Jackrich hailed him as a man whose life “embodies leadership, integrity, and service.”

He commended Lulu-Briggs’ consistent contributions to the state’s growth, his support for young people, and his role as a “symbol of peace, reconciliation, and progress.”
