BREAKING: Armed thugs storm private exhibition preview in Benin city, Edo state, threatening and trapping the European Union, German & Danish Ambassadors, foreign dignitaries, and investors.
What began as a calm Sunday morning of art, culture, and international collaboration turned into pandemonium when armed thugs invaded a private exhibition hosted by the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) in Benin City.
The event, organized as a private viewing for select investors, artists, and international dignitaries, was violently disrupted when a mob forcefully stormed the premises, declaring that the museum “belonged to the Oba of Benin.” Eyewitnesses reported that the group arrived wielding weapons, physically assaulted individuals on site, and damaged properties in an attempt to breach the secure area where guests were seated.
Among those present were the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, the French Ambassador, and the Danish Ambassador, who, along with other attendees, were trapped inside the facility as chaos unfolded.
Security personnel and event organizers acted swiftly to protect the guests and contain the situation before law enforcement authorities intervened. However, the brazen nature of the attack, particularly on a gathering attended by foreign envoys, has raised serious concerns about security, rule of law, and the safety of cultural institutions in Edo State.
The incident has sparked outrage within the local and international community, with many calling for a thorough investigation and accountability for those involved.
