U.S. Mourns Former President Buhari, Offers Condolences To Nigerians

The United States Mission in Nigeria has extended its condolences to the Nigerian people following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader whose life was marked by discipline, public service, and a strong commitment to restoring integrity in governance.

In a statement on Sunday, the U.S. Mission said it was deeply saddened by the passing of the former Nigerian leader and joined Nigerians in mourning a man whose tenure and influence left a significant mark on the country’s democratic evolution.

“The U.S. Mission in Nigeria extends our deepest condolences to the people of Nigeria on the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, a leader whose life was defined by service, discipline, and a commitment to restore integrity to public office,” the statement read.

Highlighting the late president’s contributions to democratic development, the U.S. noted: “His legacy includes his efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions.”

The Mission concluded by expressing solidarity with Buhari’s family and the broader Nigerian population, saying, “Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and all Nigerians who mourn this loss.”

President Buhari, a retired general, ruled Nigeria as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later returned to power through democratic elections in 2015. His administration focused on anti-corruption, security, and economic reform.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday evening mourned the death of his predecessor, who passed away in London following a prolonged illness.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Buhari died at about 4:30 p.m. in the United Kingdom.

The Presidency said Tinubu had since spoken with the former First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, to express his condolences over the loss.

In response to the development, the President directed Vice President Kashim Shettima and the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, to travel to the UK immediately to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.

As a mark of respect for the late former President, President Tinubu has also ordered all national flags to be flown at half-mast.
