, says Local Knowledge and Harmonization Essential for Effective Maritime Security

Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, the senator representing Bayelsa West in the 10th Assembly, has voiced his support for the engagement of Tantita Limited in the fight against oil theft in the Niger-Delta. Speaking on the Arise TV Breakfast show, Senator Dickson emphasized the importance of Tantita’s local knowledge of the complex Niger-Delta terrain in combating this issue.

Highlighting the intricate nature of the Niger-Delta, Senator Dickson acknowledged that successfully navigating the region requires familiarity with its waterways and maritime dynamics. He expressed confidence in Tantita’s ability to leverage their understanding of the area, particularly citing the expertise of Government Tompolo, the driving force behind the company.

Regarding the contribution of firms like Tantita in reducing oil theft, Senator Dickson emphasized the limitations faced by formal security personnel, urging support for Tantita’s involvement. He underscored the complexity of the Niger-Delta’s geographical entity, characterized by interconnected rivers, creeks, riverlets, and dense mangrove environments. Senator Dickson saw the engagement of local maritime players as a necessary strategy to effectively collaborate with established security forces.

Responding to concerns about the existing maritime security architecture, Senator Dickson clarified that Tantita’s involvement should not be viewed as a failure of national security. He emphasized the need for local knowledge to guide and work alongside security agencies, highlighting the intention to harmonize efforts rather than replace the Nigerian Navy’s role in policing the blue waters.

Addressing the controversy surrounding the award of the surveillance contract to Tantita, Senator Dickson called for inclusivity and synergy among all stakeholders. He stressed the importance of building a harmonized structure that maximizes the contributions of various actors in providing local security and support to formal security personnel.
