A civil society group, the Citizens’ Coalition Against Corruption (CCAC), has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), calling for a comprehensive investigation into what it describes as a massive corruption scandal involving the son of the Bauchi State Governor, Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed, and other members of the state’s First Family.
In a petition dated June 30, 2025, and addressed to the EFCC Chairman, CCAC demanded an urgent probe into allegations bordering on money laundering, abuse of office, and fraudulent contract awards tied to the inner circle of Governor Bala Mohammed.
The petition, signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Comrade Yahaya M. Abdullahi, accuses Shamsudeen of operating up to 50 secret bank accounts allegedly used to launder public funds with the connivance of his father, Governor Bala Mohammed, his mother, and other proxies.
According to the group, “Mr. Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed is alleged to have opened up to fifty (50) bank accounts through which he has laundered illicit funds allegedly siphoned from Bauchi State government coffers. These transactions were reportedly done with the knowledge and support of his father, Governor Bala Mohammed, and in collaboration with corporate fronts and his mother.”
The group also flagged a shady N30billion contract awarded by the Bauchi State Government in April 2024 for the construction of 11 township roads.
The project, CCAC claims, was handed to TYC Construction Company, a firm fraudulently presented to the public as a Chinese-owned company.
“In reality,” the group wrote, “the company was recently registered and is controlled by Ahmad Bala Mohammed (the Governor’s son) and Lawan Mohammed Adamu (the Governor’s son-in-law, married to his daughter).”
“This elaborate setup served as a vehicle to misappropriate public funds, with 50% of the contract sum allegedly paid upfront and funneled through this family-run company. This amounts to a coordinated act of self-dealing and abuse of office by the Governor and his relatives.”
CCAC further alleged a pattern of intimidation against those who have attempted to expose the rot, including a specific mention of Dr. Abubakar Ahmad, a respected indigene of the state.
“It is further disturbing that while these crimes go unpunished, individuals such as Dr. Abubakar Ahmad, a respected Bauchi indigene and outspoken voice against corruption, have reportedly faced intimidation and persecution. It is feared that his opposition to these corrupt practices may be linked to attempts to suppress dissent and silence whistleblowers,” the petition read.
CCAC, in its petition, called on the EFCC to urgently launch a comprehensive investigation into the financial activities of Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed and his network of associates.
The group also demanded a probe into the true ownership and operations of TYC Construction Company, with a full audit of all funds disbursed to the firm by the Bauchi State Government.
It further urged the Commission to scrutinise the involvement of Governor Bala Mohammed in the alleged diversion of public funds, while insisting on immediate safeguards for whistleblowers and activists like Dr. Abubakar Ahmad, who have spoken out against the corruption.
The group warned that Nigeria’s anti-corruption war risks being seen as selective unless such “brazen looting” is met with accountability.
“Nigeria’s fight against corruption must not be selective. We urge the EFCC to uphold its constitutional mandate and ensure that the rule of law prevails, regardless of political or familial affiliations. The people of Bauchi State, like all Nigerians, deserve accountability, not exploitation,” the petition concluded.
