It is no longer news that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the once biggest political party in sub-Saharan Africa, has been embroiled in series of self-inflicted crises that may lead to implosion.
The PDP’s current travails is tied to the unending failures and complicity of the current National Working committee (NWC) led by Ambassador Iliya Damagun with the bad eggs of the party.
Truth is; all is not well with the PDP. The party seems to have been auctioned off by the Damagum-led NWC without the immediate notice of its supporters.
The members of the party don’t know for sure who they serve currently. The odds are likely that they might be on the playbook of the APC courtesy of the NWC of the PDP.
What is even more disturbing is the flagrant disregard for the sentiments of loyal party members who work tirelessly to see to the good fortunes of the party.
For the three musketeers, Damagum, Bature and Sam Anyanwu, rewarding those who worked hard to kill the party have become the norm.
Anyanwu has never hidden his love for those who seek to destroy the party. We have seen him times without number, dining and wining with the Wikes of the PDP.
Again, the good people of Imo State must now decide if this is the kind of character they want to govern them. A man who will auction the State for personal gains is definitely not the best bet.
The NWC Chairman has indeed turned the fortunes of the PDP around for worse. Once the party of choice, today it is the party that even the least party in Nigeria can compare itself with, in terms of stability index.
In the face of obvious anti-party and clear disregard for the party’s constitution, Damagum and his boys have somehow manage to pat the offenders in the back without subjecting them to the party’s disciplinary mechanism.
The story is same everywhere; in Kogi, those who worked against the party in the last election are those who they have connived with to hijack congress electoral materials.
As if the above criminal tendency is not enough, the NWC has gone ahead to, as against the party’s guidelines of constituting appeal committee in not more than 72hrs of the congress, to set-up an appeal three (3) weeks after the congress heist in Kogi.
The same goes for Benue State. The entire universe is aware of the role Ortom played in the last general election to prevent His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar and the PDP from winning at the polls. Rather than chastise Ortom and his group of renegades, The Damagum-led NWC wants to reward them with the party structures.
The same cash-and-carry politics is what led to the emerge of a certain Natasha Akpoti to emerge victorious in the 2023 senatorial election in Kogi State.
Against every known democratic practices in the world, it was alleged that the National
Secretary of the PDP, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu traded the original adhoc delegate list for his personal gains. A move that would ultimately put the party in one human being’s pocket.
The PDP NWC may not be ready for the forthcoming Edo State Governorship election but the Governor of Edo state, Governor Obaseki and the candidate, Asue Ighodalo, have done well and have given the PDP a good stronghold in the minds of the voters, but in Rivers State, the PDP is by its own making a shadow of itself because the leaders of the PDP in Abuja seem to have sold the party to the highest bidder. They put the PDP for sale in Abuja and even the PDP in Rivers State was not left out.
Before they bury the party, this is a wake-up call for all well-meaning members and supporters of the party to rise against the impunity and recklessness of Damagum-led NWC. The BOT and Caucus of the party must prevail on Damagum, Anwayu and Bature to lift their knees off the neck of the PDP.
