The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Mohammed Doro, on Tuesday held two separate engagements with the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State, culminating in his unanimous adoption as the political leader of the party in the Northern Senatorial District.
The engagements began with a closed-door meeting with members of the Plateau State Executive Committee (Exco) of the APC, led by the State Chairman, Hon. Rufus Bature, at the party’s Kalwa House Secretariat in Jos.
Party sources said discussions at the Exco session focused on party cohesion, internal alignment and strategic support for the policies and programmes of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration.
Dr. Doro later addressed party leaders and stakeholders from the Northern Senatorial District at a second meeting that was fully covered by the media. The gathering drew a wide spectrum of political actors, including serving and former members of the National Assembly and the Plateau State House of Assembly, former members of the Plateau State Executive Council, local government council chairmen, party leaders and respected elders from across the zone.
At the meeting, stakeholders unanimously adopted Dr. Doro as the political leader of the APC in the Northern Zone of Plateau State and pledged their collective support to ensure his success in providing the zone with the purposeful and inclusive leadership it has long yearned for.
Responding, the minister called for unity and collective action, stressing that cohesion remains critical to the party’s strength and electoral success.
“Let us join hands and walk together. We are capable of achieving any result if we come together. We can deliver for the APC, and we can deliver for Mr President come 2027,” he said.
Dr. Doro noted that President Tinubu has taken bold and sometimes difficult decisions aimed at repositioning Nigeria and placing the economy on a path of recovery. He urged party leaders to continue mobilising grassroots support for the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The minister expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him through his appointment, describing it as a responsibility to deliver tangible results, particularly for the most vulnerable Nigerians.
According to him, the Renewed Hope Agenda represents visionary leadership rooted in inclusivity, progressive governance and strong institutions, with a focus on improving the living conditions of Nigerians.
“President Tinubu is committed to improving the lives of all Nigerians and ensuring that they experience the benefits of Renewed Hope and the dividends of democracy,” he said.
Dr. Doro also commended the National Chairman of the APC, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, for his role in ensuring that the ministerial appointment was zoned to Plateau North, describing it as a reflection of equity and internal democracy within the party.
Highlighting the scale of the humanitarian and poverty reduction challenge, the minister noted that Nigeria’s population of about 230 million includes nearly 63 per cent who are multidimensionally poor, while about 30 per cent fall into the category of extreme poverty.
“These figures underscore the enormity of the responsibility that Mr President has placed on us. We are expected to make a dent in these numbers through effective humanitarian response and sustainable poverty reduction,” he said.
Dr. Doro disclosed that the ministry has undergone a recent review and repositioning to ensure the implementation of clear, actionable policies capable of delivering measurable impact.
Describing himself as a son of Plateau State, the minister assured stakeholders of his commitment to making the Northern Zone and the state proud through dedicated service and effective leadership, while urging party members to remain united in strengthening the APC and supporting the Tinubu administration.
